MKE Neighborhood #13 - WESTOWN

The neighborhood to the west of the Milwaukee River, Westown makes up half of Milwaukee’s bustling downtown. You'll find the city's vibrant entertainment district here, home to sports arenas as well as popular venues like the Miller High Life Theatre, Riverside Theater, and Turner Hall Ballroom. The new home of the Milwaukee Bucks, the Wisconsin Sports and Entertainment Center, is slated to open in the fall of 2018, but the excitement is still going strong at the BMO Harris Bradley Center and the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena. Just a block away from the arenas is Old World Third Street, a major hub for nightlife downtown and the historic heart of Milwaukee’s German community.

MKE Neighborhood #12 - WALKER'S POINT

The longtime hub of Milwaukee’s gay community, this neighborhood is now also a hotbed of foodie activity with an industrial edge. You’ll find some of the city’s best LGBTQ bars and nightclubs alongside award-winning restaurants and locally-made artisan food products. Many of the neighborhood’s bars and restaurants are focused along Second Street, but Fifth Street is quickly becoming another hotspot for the area.

MKE Neighborhood #11 - RIVERWEST

This diverse, offbeat neighborhood has a DIY sensibility that runs deep. You’ll find a little bit of everything here, from funky music venues to intimate restaurants, brewpubs to tiki bars. Riverwest is an eclectic neighborhood with strong communal spirit, home to a community-run bar, a community radio station, and a thriving co-op. There’s no time that spirit is stronger than during the Riverwest 24, an annual 24-hour bike race that’s part street race and part all-night block party.

MKE Neighborhood #10 - MENOMONEE RIVER VALLEY

Thanks to dedicated locals, this once blighted industrial area has been revitalized with green spaces and sustainable buildings and attractions. The Menomonee River Valley is now home to Three Bridges Park, a 24-acre park, outdoor classroom, and recreation hub, as well as can’t-miss attractions like Potawatomi Hotel & Casino, the Harley-Davidson Museum, and Miller Park.

MKE Neighborhood #9 - HISTORIC THIRD WARD

Trendy shops and dining abound in this revitalized warehouse district. Block after block of formerly industrial space is now home to galleries, restaurants, boutique shops, and stylish national retailers like West Elm, Anthropologie, and Pendleton. The neighborhood is anchored on the north end by the Milwaukee Public Market and by the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design to the south. Along the lakefront is Henry Maier Festival Park, where Milwaukee’s lakefront comes alive every summer for festival after festival.

Tuesday, July 10, 2018

MKE Neighborhood #8 - HARBOR DISTRICT

It was water that first brought people to the land that would become Milwaukee. A lush rice marsh gave way to a bustling port, and today the city is working to revitalize Milwaukee’s harbor. Water technology and research takes center stage at the new UW-Milwaukee School of Freshwater Sciences, and construction will start soon on a new waterfront park with a play structure, canoe launch, and more.

This trendy neighborhood is a melting pot of UW-Milwaukee students, young professionals, and longtime residents. If you’re looking for a night out, whether it’s dinner, drinking, or dancing, you’ll probably find yourself on the East Side. One of the city’s nightlife hubs is Brady Street, the historic home of Milwaukee’s Italian population that has only gotten more funky and fun since the hippies moved in in the 1960s. The North Avenue area is packed with restaurants, indie movie theaters, jazz clubs, and more.

MKE Neighborhood #5 - CLARKE SQUARE

This diverse neighborhood is a gateway to Milwaukee’s predominantly Hispanic south side. You’ll feel the energy of the community on Cesar Chavez Drive and National Avenue, two main streets in the neighborhood lined with local restaurants, bakeries, and businesses. Beautiful murals throughout the neighborhood also speak to the resident’s sense of community and heritage.

MKE Neighborhood #4 - BRONZEVILLE

The historic economic and social heart of Milwaukee’s African-American community, this area is now the center of major redevelopment efforts. Annual festivals celebrate the strong roots of jazz and the arts in the neighborhood, and the main thoroughfare, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, is lined with African American-owned businesses. Enjoy the diverse dining and shopping establishments on this street and throughout surrounding neighborhoods like Harambee and Halyard Park.

Friday, June 15, 2018

MKE Neighborhood #3 - BREWERS HILL

Located on a bluff overlooking the Milwaukee River, Brewers Hill boomed at the turn of the 20th century as a residential area for the laborers who worked in the foundries, tanneries, mills, and breweries that lined the river. You’ll still find a brewery on the river here (featuring a nationally-ranked brewery tour!), plus great dining on top of the hill.

MKE Neighborhood #2 - BAY VIEW

Just south of the city on the coast of Lake Michigan, Bay View is a hip and eclectic neighborhood popular with families and young professionals alike. Home to one of the city’s most popular bar districts, it’s also a hotbed of local art and creativity with gallery nights, a thriving farmers market and maker fair, and one of the city's most beloved weekly concert series. You'll find plenty of opportunities to get outdoors on lakefront trails or at beer gardens in neighborhood parks. From record shops and great music venues to craft beer and dining, Bay View combines city fun with a charming neighborhood feel.

MKE Neighborhood #1 - AVENUES WEST AND MARQUETTE

The lively Marquette University campus and diverse residential streets now make up the heart of this neighborhood. You can’t miss signs that this was the historic home of Milwaukee’s elite, but today you’re more likely to run into college students than beer barons on Wisconsin Avenue. Home building is at a modest pace in suburban Milwaukee and Waukesha counties, and is focused largely on higher-end houses. At the same time, many baby boomers are still not ready to put a “For Sale” sign in front of their longtime residence and provide millennials an affordable house to buy.
